Effects of Some Plant Extracts on Some Selected Fungal Species

Abstract


A study was conducted on the efficacy of plant extracts on the management of fungal pathogens. A stock culture of Fusarium oxysporum, F. avenasiun, and Pythium aphanidermatum was used. Methanol and ethanol extracts of back and leaves of neem (Azadiracter indica L.) and mango (Mangifera indica L.) was investigated for their antifungal activity using agar incorporation method. The antifungal sensitivity of ethanol and methanol back and leaf extracts of mango and neem at 20, 40 and 60mg/ml concentrations were tested in vitro against the three fungal pathogens. The results revealed that the highest percentage inhibitions and extracts sensitivity recorded was 82.5% in F. oxysporum72.4%in P. aphanidermatum and 77.3% in F. avenacium at 60mg/ml for neem methanol leaf extracts. Moderate inhibition percentage was observed at 20, 40 and 60mg/ml with 66.2% mango methanol back and leaf extracts.
